Right Trough My Fingers”

This image shows a set of hands outstretched, submerged in ocean waters. Specifically, it is a portrait of my own hands, photographed on the shores of Miami Beach – across the Atlantic, 7,500 kilometers away, we are connected by the same body of water.

Images of hands positioned in this manner often represent cleansing. while outstretched, open hands also signify honest and truthful intentions. But more significantly, this is meant to represent a commitment and responsibility to the ocean, as the fate of this ocean is quite literally in the hands of all of us. The image portrayed is not one of transaction; nothing is being given to the ocean, nor is anything being taken away. The focus is one of harmony and coexistence, as neither the human element nor the water holds power over the other.

The hands are moving together, but are split into two sections, to show that while efforts are being made, there is still more work to be done before all humans coming together on this issue. On the arms of the main subject, a mermaid tattoo is a nod to Denmark, its original illustration derived from Danish literature. The mermaid represents an intrinsic human connection to the water, an identifiable icon relatable across cultures, timeless and elemental.

Opposite the mermaid is the anchor, first tattooed on sailors who successfully crossed an ocean, it represents commitment, a sense of home, and safe harbor. The message “Love you see you” is Mette Koudal’s tattoo for her children, which I found very fitting, as the intention of the UN goals is to preserve what we have now for our children’s future. The symbol at the top of the writing is an old Ukrainian symbol that means “protector”. I am of Ukrainian descent, and I have this one as a tattoo as well.

BKFoxx was born in 1988 in Long Island, New York City. Her name comes from her initials combined with her favorite animal, the fox, an animal with positive symbolism in almost all cultures. She is an autodidact street artist, who only uses spray paint to create her photorealistic murals; no brushes, no projectors, and no stencils.

She became interested in street art in 2013, practicing with spray paint in abandoned buildings. She thought it was powerful to be able to transform an entire place with just paint. Starting with old, run down walls in New York City, her talent has propelled her to the forefront of the contemporary New York street art stage.

BKFoxx usually starts with an idea or a concept, then sets up a scene and photographs it, and from that makes a reference image for the wall. The images are intended to be high quality, potent, and thought provoking to the viewer. Sensitive to the animal cause and to environmental issues, she demonstrates her undeniable talent to perfectly incarnate hyper-realism. The attention that she gives to detail in her paintings make them faithful to the pictorial reality of the world, all the while emitting a speech of commitment, of a society struggling with environmental issues.

BK’s aim is to emotionally move people andmake an impact on our reality by making us more aware of the circumstances that surround us. She likes the idea that some art should be temporary, existing while it is relevant and meant to be appreciated in real time. Also she thinks that art is important for everyone, and focuses on public art for that reason.

BKFoxx currently lives in Miami and New York City. Over the years she has been invited to paint murals all around the world.
