“Deja vu”

Via a double exposure effect, Cristian Blanxer’s mural mixes a silhouette of a girl with a photography that he took of a street in Barcelona, in the lockdown during the COVID 19 pandemic. Beneath the ancient buildings we can see a few people walking and sitting in the street Carrer de la Mercè and in front of the square Plaça de la Mercè.

The main figure poses in a calm and relaxed position, hiding her face in her arms. Her arms overlap the ancient stones of the historic buildings, and creates a triangle together with the arch of the building, and the perspective of the street under the arch creates a window effect or ”trompe l'oeil”.

The security cameras and the smartwatch on the girl’s wrist are two references to industry and innovation. It makes us reflect on how almost all of us are geolocated and monitored, andt can spark a debate on how much control there is in society and on how much freedom we have left.

Cristian Blanxer was born in Barcelona in 1985, where he lived until a few years ago when he moved up in the mountains to a small village. Besides working with his own art, he runs a refuge where artists can stay and work for shorter or longer periods of time.

Cristian is an only child, who was born and raised in small quarters in the rougher part of Barcelona. His father has always had a great passion for drawing, so the parents bet everything on Cristian getting an education in art, something his father never had been able to achieve.

In 2008, after completing his degree in Fine Arts, he started working as a freelancer and illustrator. His versatile spirit has led him to explore different styles and techniques. The search for new paths, his spontaneous brushstrokes and the intensity of color perception are all reflected in his works. The impressionistic light and poetry of the expressive print define Blanxer's art.

Most of his works portrays human actions, from the ordinary to more surreal situations. Nevertheless, he tries to be as impartial as possible to the subject, so that emotions can arise freely in his work. With his unique style, Cristian blends people and places, while adding poetry, and depth to each of his creations. The spontaneous brushstrokes and the intensity of the perception of colors are part of his signature. His dynamic scenes inhabit the contours of the human form and offer a new look into humanity.

Cristian’s iconic works are featured in galleries and on walls around Europe and the United States of America.
