“Balance”

The very idea surrounding this mural is city, nature, and mankind.

We want the viewer to be able to freely interpret our work. All art can be experienced differently from person to person. At their best, works can give us an epiphany and expand our horizons. This is exactly what we hope for with our work. The interpretation is up to the individual viewer, but in any case, there is a theme of balance in the painting.

The famous Danish cartoonist and writer Storm P. once said that there’s always something musty about when art has to be explained!

The reason we paint is simply that we are not good at putting our views and perception of subjects into words. To us, words don’t come close to what we can express with the brushes. If we were good with words, it would have been much better if we had become writers or poets.

Peter Birk and Hans Krull both live their lives with brushes in their hands. They are both very productive and have an extensive artistic production behind them both together and apart. Their creative process is similar in many ways: It's fast, wild and it doesn't require too much planning. They complement each other amazingly well, and in their creative collaboration, one plus one easily becomes three!

Their ages and backgrounds, however, are very different.

Hans Oldau Krull was born on 21 January 1952 in Svendborg. He is known as a graphic artist, painter and sculptor. Krull was educated at the Aarhus Art Academy in 1969-70 and then as a graphic artist at the art academy in Krakow, Poland, where he studied 1974-77. Krull calls himself "a provincial cosmopolitan" and is connected to Aarhus both by virtue of his long artistic oeuvre in the city and the many works he has created in the public space, including "The Seagull's Kiss" in Fiskergade (1985), the three statues in front of Hotel Royal and the outside ornamentation of Café Under Masken, which is housed in the basement below the hotel.

Peter Birk was born in 1985 in Hedensted. He is self-taught, recruited from the graffiti community. For many years, Peter Birk's life consisted mostly of painting graffiti, he cultivated it on a serious level and was well-known in the graffiti environment both at home and abroad. He was also known in several of the Danish prisons, because he did not always manage to escape the long arm of the law.

He has since established himself as an artist with many years of experience on both the Danish and international street art scene. Peter Birk has made a name for himself within the street art culture in Denmark and the rest of the world.

He often works in series, with motifs that repeat. Sometimes jars, palms and ornamentation. Other times moons, fields and mountains. Together with Hans Oldau Krull, Peter Birk has, among other things, worked on several giant paintings on ” Aarhus Ø”. He is also the founder and co-owner of Galleri Grisk, which is an unconventional gallery with a mission to give places and environments new meaning via the dissemination of street art.
